David Vigorito on the main-line Slav, published by Gambit in 2009 in the Chess Explained series, which works through an opening in complete annotated games rather than variation tables.

Seven chapters, organized by the critical branching points after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 dxc4 5.a4 Bf5. Two chapters take the Dutch Variation, with 9.Qe2 and with 9.Nh4, the latter being White’s attempt to hunt down the f5-bishop. Three more cover the Central Variation, split by 6…Nbd7 7.Nxc4 Qc7, 6…Nbd7 7.Nxc4 Nb6 and 6…e6. The last two chapters handle Black avoiding 5…Bf5 with the Bronstein and Smyslov variations, and White avoiding 5.a4 with the quiet 5.e3 and the Geller Gambit. A list of games and an index of variations close the book.

Best for: club and tournament players on either side of the Slav. Intermediate to advanced.
