All the positions are mate in one, but they are sorted by the phase of the game they came from, which quietly teaches where mating chances actually appear. The opening section runs through silly games, open games, semi-open games and closed games. The middlegame section is sorted by device: pins, double check, discovered check, attacks on the kingside and queenside castled positions, attacks on an uncastled king, and the harder idea of delivering mate as a way of answering a check. The ending section covers pawn, minor-piece and major-piece endings. A closing section on chess aesthetics gathers positions with all the pieces on one diagonal, file or rank.
Best for: children moving from the basics into real positions. Beginner.
