The organizing idea is how many pieces are on the board, which keeps the difficulty rising in small steps. Positions with three pieces come first, king and one piece against a bare king. Then four pieces, either king and one piece each side or king and two pieces against a lone king. Then five, in three arrangements. A set of exercises follows, and then a short section of fun puzzles with a lighter touch, including the king that fell off the board, a stolen piece, filling in the colors of the pieces, and en passant. Solutions close the book.
Best for: children who know the moves and are learning to finish the game. Beginner.
