The first volume of Igor Sukhin’s course for children, published by Mongoose Press in 2010. Hardcover. It opens with a note for coaches, parents, teachers and trainers, so the book can be worked through with an adult or alone.
The material is built one piece at a time, and the structure is the teaching method. The rook comes first, then the bishop, then rooks and bishops together; then the queen, then queens with rooks and bishops; then the knight, then the pawn, then the king, each new piece immediately combined with everything learned before it. Only once all the pieces are in play does the book reach check, checkmate, stalemate, perpetual check, castling and capturing en passant. Solutions are given at the back.
Best for: children learning the moves, and the adult teaching them. Beginner.
