Nikolay Yakovlev on middlegame planning, built from short numbered examples rather than long games. Published by Mongoose Press in 2010.

The examples run past a hundred, each one titled and only a page or two long, and they are grouped into four chapters. Strongpoints and Weaknesses opens with pawns and weak squares, invasion points, holes in the castled position and inducing weaknesses, and includes several entries that argue the other way, that doubled pawns are not necessarily bad and that a weakness your opponent cannot exploit is not a weakness. Play In and For the Center follows, then a long chapter on position play covering prophylaxis, the Spanish exchange, mobility, files and diagonals, and finally a chapter on attack.

Best for: club players who want plans in small, digestible pieces. Intermediate.
