The book is two things at once. The first half is an account: what chess means to the author, the case for chess in prisons, a prison visit, a chapter on women and chess, testimony from inmates in their own words, and a look at where prison chess might go. The second half is a working course, with a short history and the rules, hints for improvement, a chapter on motivation and study, three graded exercise sets, and a collection of thirteen annotated games. An appendix asks whether chess is art, and a glossary and resources list follow.
Best for: anyone interested in chess as outreach, and beginners who want a course inside it.
