Every chess column Bobby Fischer wrote for Boys’ Life, the Boy Scouts of America magazine, from December 1966 through January 1970. Collected by Russell Enterprises in 2016 with the Boy Scouts’ permission, with a foreword by Andy Soltis. Paperback, 128 pages.
The columns appear in the order they were published, month by month, with short timeline sections placed between the years. The range is unusual for Fischer: he answers the most elementary questions his young readers sent in, including what en passant is and whether you can claim a draw after being checkmated, and in the same pages sets composed problems he called “puzzlers,” among them a helpmate in two. He also annotated his own games here, including the win over Emil Nikolic at Vinkovci 1968 that never made it into My Sixty Memorable Games.
Best for: Fischer readers, and beginners who want him explaining the basics. Any level.
