Rather than assuming the bishop pair is simply an advantage, the seven chapters test the claim from both sides. The first two set the pair against a bishop and knight and then against two knights. The middle chapters turn to the defender’s resources under stubborn defense, to when the bishop pair should be exchanged off, and to investing material to obtain or keep it. The last two chapters are the honest ones: a chapter on positions where the bishop pair fails, and a closing chapter on the compensatory factors that offset it. An index of games completes the book.
